Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a statement.

Law enforcement say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.

The liquid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they added.

Law enforcement then found multiple other smeared automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the public display of Nazi symbols.

Officials say early analysis show the liquid was probably human blood.

"At present there remains no clue as to its source; investigators are not yet informed of any harm in relation with the event," they stated.

Municipal representatives said they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the residents for tips.

A high-ranking political figure said the attack made him speechless and needed to be solved promptly.

"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on online, recalling the death of nine individuals by a gunman targeting individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
